Eddie Shields
Eddie is a Qualified Master Craftsman who brings in-depth knowledge of the principals of construction, experience with different building techniques and extensive industry and teaching experience.

“I’ve worked on standard buildings through to sustainable buildings and am also very well qualified in carpentry, have a sound understanding of professional health and safety and relate to all types of building professionals – from architects to carpenters.”

Originally from Scotland, he began his career in 1981 as an apprentice carpenter with Strathclyde Regional Council, Glasgow, where he honed his trade before going on to a wide variety of roles in the building sector. He has worked as a foreman overseeing the construction of a 700-capacity prison in the United States, acted as an expert witness for insurance claims and as a consultant for architectural firms undertaking structural testing of new building components before they are released to market.

Between 1988 and 1993 he worked for the Scottish Museum’s Council erecting exhibitions for the Smith Art Gallery and Museum. His teaching experience includes 16 years as a lecturer in building science for the Department of Architecture and Building Science at the University of Strathclyde “teaching the science behind how buildings stand up and how they fail”.

Emigrating to New Zealand with his wife and daughter in 2009, Eddie worked as a self-employed carpenter before joining NMIT in 2011.

“What I really enjoy is the interaction with students, seeing them progressing and working with my hands and timber .”

Along with a raft of qualifications he is also an Institute of Carpenters Craftsman, Scotland, Recognised Licentiate of the Institute of City and Guilds with a Senior Award in Wood Occupations Management, Master Craftsman and licensed building Practitioner in New Zealand.
