Peter Penniall
Peter Penniall lives and breathes engineering.

He started his apprenticeship in Invercargill with H.E. Melhop, one of the top engineering firms in the region and has experience with many different types of engineering, including machine shop, marine engineering and refrigeration, steam and water reticulation.  

He has worked as a Relief Engineer on the SS Earnslaw - the 100 year old ‘Lady of the Lake’ in Queenstown. Other roles have included Shift Engineer at a freezing works and several years at a pneumatics company as a Technical Representative – designing, fitting and maintaining pneumatic circuits for clients. He later moved into secondary education and spent eight years as a technical teacher (metal based) including four years as a dean. Other roles have included Chief Engineer at a South Otago woollen mill, Junior Engineer on large ships and 11 years as a Plant Engineer for a large family bakery.

Peter has worked at NMIT since 2007 and enjoys the interaction with students. “I like passing on my knowledge and guiding students into the type of engineering that suits their strengths and interests. I also enjoy keeping myself upskilled in the latest technology and working on my own projects.”
