Online programme.

Nonfiction writing is such an extraordinarily wide field, but fascinating in that diversity. It also, arguably, reaches bigger audiences and more readers than any other form of writing.

To receive the Nonfiction Studio award(external link) you must complete two courses; Practical Nonfiction and Creative Nonfiction.

In Practical Nonfiction, we look at a range of nonfiction forms in the media, which can be collectively considered ‘professional writing’.

In Creative Nonfiction, you will get the opportunity to experiment with a range of creative nonfiction forms, including memoir, personal essays, environment writing and travel writing.

What will I learn in these courses?

Practical Nonfiction – Semester 1

In this course, we look at a range of nonfiction forms in the media, which can be collectively considered ‘professional writing’. It’s such an extraordinarily wide field, but fascinating in that diversity.

It may be that some of you have a particular interest in nonfiction or are already working on or aiming to work in a position in which you will need to practise certain particular forms of nonfiction, probably of the more technical or informative genres – or sub-genres. Because the delivery of this course is largely online – with fortnightly workshops providing an opportunity to meet with your tutor and fellow students – we have the flexibility to offer you the possibility of pursuing professional interests or needs.

Topics include:

  • Interviewing and research skills
  • Writing bios/profiles
  • Media releases
  • News reporting
  • Feature writing
  • Copywriting
  • Technical writing
  • Opinions and reviews

During the course, you will write first drafts of four to five of the nonfiction forms above, polish about three of those for your final folio, and provide feedback to a selection of your peers about their pieces.

Creative Nonfiction – Semester 2

In this course you will get the opportunity to experiment with a range of creative nonfiction forms, including memoir, personal essays, environment writing and travel writing. One of the things you will swiftly recognise is that there are many potential blurrings of the boundaries between them. How does one differentiate between memoir and autobiography? Where and why does memoir suddenly transform into personal essay and travel writing? What are the key differences between travel writing and environment writing? Isn't it all personal narrative? Do these sub-genres really exist? Are they relevant and do they even matter - or are they simply useful ways for publishers and libraries - and teachers - to categorise and manage the art-form known as 'creative nonfiction'?

At various points in the course we will try to tease out some of these issues, but they will be apparent right from the outset. We will also briefly deconstruct that umbrella term and gain deep insight into the perplexing, paradoxical nature and name of this genre and what riches it offers the creative writer.

Topics include:

  • Principles of Creative Nonfiction
  • Personal narrative
  • Memoir
  • Travel writing
  • Lyric and personal essay
  • Writing about the environment
  • Revising for publication
  • Writing pitches

During the course, you will write first drafts of between four and five creative nonfiction pieces, polish about three of those for your final folio, and provide feedback to a selection of your peers about their pieces.
