Chief Executive of NMIT Appointed

Liam replaces Tony Gray who resigned as Chief Executive of NMIT in 2017 to take up the role of Chief Executive at Ara Institute of Canterbury. 

“Liam brings significant knowledge and expertise to the role of Chief Executive. He has been Interim Chief Executive for nine months and during that time he has provided strong leadership to the Institute. This has been particularly important during the change in Government and in managing our response to current sector challenges. The Council is confident that he will continue to ensure the provision of strong and strategic leadership to strengthen the position of NMIT within the tertiary sector,” said Daryl Wehner. 

Liam has worked in leadership roles in the education sector in both the UK and New Zealand. Prior to his appointment as Interim Chief Executive of NMIT he was Director of Learning, Teaching and Quality with the Institute. In that role he introduced a range of initiatives that added value to the organisation and positioned the Institute in a sector leadership role. These included Performance Panel monitoring that resulted in a two percent increase in course completions and also increased retention and progression rates amongst learners at NMIT. He also implemented a curriculum restructure that increased Institute capacity and development of capability across programme areas. Prior to his role with NMIT, Liam was Vice Principal Curriculum and Learners at City of Bristol College in the UK. In that role he was responsible for the provision of strategic leadership with regard to the development and delivery of curriculum strategy.

“I am delighted to have been appointed to the Chief Executive role at NMIT. I have enjoyed the challenge of providing leadership to the Institute over the past nine months and I look forward to not only continuing in that leadership role but in introducing a range of new initiatives that will help position NMIT well for the future. I am committed to supporting both learners through their journey and my academic team in this new role. We have a challenging environment ahead of us and I look forward to leading the organisation through this next phase of development,” said Liam Sloan.
