Provided through donations by local residents Peter Hancock and Patricia Pollard through their family trust, the annual award is gifted to a ‘deserving, meritorious and in-need' NMIT student.

Peter Hancock says he was motivated to develop the scholarship because without financial support when he was studying, he could not have completed his university degree.

“We were both so helped ourselves as students way back in the 1960s,” he says.

“This has enabled us to have successful careers and towards the end of them now, we would like to give something back to society.”

The scholarship is for people who are going to contribute to society and benefit the community.

“We are contributing by way of a scholarship to a student who will, in turn, likely give back to society, as something very worthwhile,” Peter says. “We are very happy to do this.”

Shanine Hermsen from the Fifeshire Foundation says they are thrilled to offer this scholarship to a local student in collaboration with the donors and NMIT.

“This opportunity reflects the values of the Fifeshire Foundation, and we eagerly anticipate helping a student in need complete their studies and make meaningful contributions to our community and society,” Shanine says.

“This is in alignment with our purpose to assist locals facing hardship or crisis to make long term changes in their lives.”

The recipient will be jointly chosen by the Fifeshire Foundation and donors. They will consider an applicant’s academic merit, interests, activities, and ambitions and decide who would most likely make a positive contribution to the Nelson Tasman region and society.

The Fifeshire-Hancock Scholarship is currently open for applications from students about to commence their final-year degree studies. Applications close 28 November 2024.
