Adventure tourism students on a rafting trip
Pulling up at NMIT you might see Adventure Tourism staff and students loading the trailer with rafts or kayaks for a day out on the water. Outside Te Toki Pakohe, the vans might be being loaded before heading out for a noho marae. Hospitality and Cookery students are busy in the state of the art kitchen facilities creating dishes for the Rata Room.

If you pop into class you will see the students working alongside tutors. NMIT puts time and energy into making sure tutors have the skills to share their industry knowledge well. If you are interested, you can read more about the teaching. The difference is noticed, Nick studied IT and he said, “The tutors are so enthusiastic about the subjects that they teach you, it rubs off on you and makes you want to come back to learn more.”
Levi, a carpentry apprentice agrees and said of his tutors, “They had more time for you. They actually cared to teach you.”
Zealand during her Trainee Ranger programme learning remote fire fighting
NMIT also offers unique experiences. NMIT runs the only Trainee Ranger programme in conjunction with the Department of Conservation. Zealand graduated from the programme and is now working in conservation for NELMAC. When she was on the programme she said, “I love the programme, it’s so much fun it’s just like a holiday.” Hairdressing students have the opportunity to work backstage in World of Wearable Arts in Wellington to style models. The opportunity is funded by NMIT. Similarly Marine Conservation and Aquaculture third year degree students go to New Caledonia to learn about tropical aquaculture.
Lifelong friends

Through these experiences students make friends for life, with fellow students and tutors. So much so they frequently come back to see tutors, such as when Canterbury Crusaders performance coach, Simon, popped in with the Super Rugby trophy and to talk to fitness students.
