The recent Weet-Bix TRYathlon was a chance for Te Tauihu kids to get active and feel like a champion. As with previous years, NMIT learners joined in the excitement, cheering on the participants and putting their skills to work in supporting regional sports events.
At Nelson’s 2025 TRYathlon in March, 20 students from NMIT’s Level 5 and Level 6 Sport and Recreation programmes spent the day supporting kids from across Te Tauihu as they challenged themselves at this iconic sporting event. Held at the Tahunanui Playfields, the Tryathlon saw over 1200 kids taking part, and the students were there to make sure the day ran smoothly. They worked in the bike transition area, helping young athletes move between the swim-to-bike and bike-to-run stages.
This hands-on experience gives the students an authentic experience of how a big sporting event is managed and organised. It’s a great opportunity for them to see the behind-the-scenes action and get a taste of what it takes to pull off large events.
Level 5 student Kyle Koizumi found the experience helpful as a hands-on example of supporting sport and recreation in the community.
“It helps me see how sport is organised and understanding that” he says.
Kyle said he found it rewarding to help the kids find their bikes and see them do their best.
The Weet-Bix TRYathlon has been a part of the NMIT Fitness department’s annual calendar since it began in Nelson, and it continues to be a fantastic opportunity for students to get practical, real-world experience.
For those studying the New Zealand Diploma in Sport, Recreation, and Exercise (Levels 5 and 6), it’s an invaluable way to see the industry in action.
