Jonathan Guild
Growing up in Auckland, Jonathan always had a keen interest in science and chemistry. He completed a BSc in Chemistry and a PGDipSci in Wine Science before travelling around New Zealand and America doing vintages.

“I like to lead my students to an answer, instead of telling them,” Jonathan says. “I ask many questions during my class and prefer a back-and-forth exchange about a topic instead of me just lecturing.”

Jonathan facilitates discussion by talking about industry examples and scenarios, so students have a complete understanding of a topic and its applications – not just a superficial grasp.

He loves working at the NMIT campus because it is home to “a great amalgamation of experts from many different industries and fields.”

Jonathan’s hobbies include gardening and fixing small engines, and he finds himself asking advice from his colleagues and sharing his own knowledge of homebrewing and winemaking.

“Having access to that knowledge, passion and community in such concentration [on the NMIT campus] is very rare and special.”

Jonathan enjoys teaching, fand believes some of the connections he has made with students and colleagues are some that he will have for life.

“Teaching is a chance to share my passion for others,” he says, “and being a part of the next generation of industry professionals is super rewarding.”
