The aim of this course is to practise and develop your skills in oil painting as a means of expression.

You will be encouraged to experiment with observational and expressive approaches in order to instil confidence and to develop and increase your skill level.

Beginner, intermediate and advanced painters will be catered for with the emphasis differing according to your level.

The teaching method will be hands on learning with reference to examples. Much of your tuition will be delivered on a one to one basis.

Entry requirements

To be eligible to enrol on this course, you must be:

a New Zealand citizen or resident
16 years of age or over
not a full-time secondary school student

However, if you are a full-time secondary school student, NMIT is able to enrol you if you meet all of the following:

are 16 years of age and over, and
attend this course outside of normal school hours, and
have obtained approval from the relevant school principal, and
have obtained approval from the TEC to enrol in an ACE Course - please allow NMIT at least 14 working days before course start date to obtain approval from TEC. If approval is not gained before the course start date, you will be shifted to the next available intake.

FAQ

Do I need to have any oil painting experience?

There are no pre-requisites for this course, beginners, intermediate and advanced painters welcome.

What equipment will be provided?

Studio equipment is provided i.e. easels, tables and glass palettes. You supply your own paints, brushes and painting supports.

Do I need to supply my own materials?

Yes. You will need to supply your own paint, brushes and painting supports i.e. stretched canvas, canvas panel or primed paper.

Impressions Art Supplies in Richmond gives 10% off all purchases if you’re registered for this course. They have my list of recommended materials.

Paints

I recommend Winton oil paints (student quality Winsor and Newton) or Rowney Georgian (student quality Daler-Rowney). These can be sourced from Impressions Art supplies in Richmond, Warehouse Stationery in Nelson or online. It is best to select your range of colours individually, but if on a tight budget you can buy a starter set of basic colours.

Essential colours:

Titanium White
Cadmium Yellow Pale or Chrome Yellow
Cadmium Red
French Ultramarine
Viridian
Burnt Sienna
Burnt Umber.

Other valuable starter colours:

Yellow Ochre
Cadmium Yellow
Permanent Rose or Alizarin Crimson
Cerulean Blue
Raw Umber.

Recommended painting medium is Liquin.

Brushes

Brushes need to be long handled and hog bristle is best for oils, although synthetic brushes can be used if a smoother finish is required. I recommend a range of sizes of round brushes, from #2-12 and a couple of filbert brushes can be added. Flat brushes are not recommended. Impressions Art Supplies has my recommended list.
