Originally from Malaysia, Xiang Yi Niak is currently pursuing his Master of Applied Management at NMIT.
Niak’s academic journey began in Taiwan, where he earned his Bachelor of Science. After almost three years of working in freight forwarding, he realised the industry lacked automation and proper data use, sparking his passion for exploring how companies can harness data more effectively.
His search for the right kind of study led him to NMIT. Niak was drawn not only to the quality of education but also by the stunning landscapes of New Zealand's South Island, which perfectly aligned with his love for connecting with nature.
“NMIT offers the Master of Applied Management programme at a competitive price compared to eight well-known universities in New Zealand,” he says.
“Further, I like the nature, scenery, and hiking paths South Island can provide, which led me to study at NMIT.”
Niak noted that the smaller classes at NMIT allow for a more intimate learning environment where lecturers know their students by name. He also found that diversity among students has helped his communication and interpersonal skills.
“NMIT offers a place for you to study and find help from academic staff, who are approachable and eager to help when you encounter academic problems,” says Niak.
When faced with challenges in his research, Niak found support from the library staff, who helped him find materials relevant to his topic. He said the staff were approachable and helpful, which has been “a big plus” in his student experience.
In addition to his studies, Niak is passionate about artificial intelligence (AI). He actively participates in the ‘AI Sandbox’ at the Mahitahi Colab space on NMIT’s Nelson campus, where he enhances his understanding of AI tools like Microsoft Co-Pilot and ChatGPT.
These tools have transformed his research process, making it more efficient and creative. He’s now keen to refine his skills in prompt engineering to solve both academic challenges and real-world problems.
For international students considering NMIT, Niak has some valuable insights about life in Nelson.
“Something that I really like about Nelson is that it is less crowded and more comfortable to live in. The city is compact, and everything is within less than 3km,” he says.
He also appreciates the diversity in New Zealand.
“For me, student diversity is something that really matters. I like the school atmosphere, especially the students' generosity and joyfulness.”
Niak emphasises the importance of time management in balancing study, work, and social life. He has dedicated his weekdays to academics, reserving Fridays for social activities like Toastmasters and church events, which help him build confidence in speaking English.
His weekends are filled with hiking adventures, allowing him to explore the breathtaking local landscapes.
“I am fortunate to have met many friends who love hiking, and there are many national parks surrounding Nelson, such as Nelson Lakes National Park, Kahurangi National Park, and Abel Tasman National Park. Those national parks are worth visiting because of their stunning nature, indigenous trees, forests, animals, and crystal-clear stream water. I really enjoy hiking and going through the trails during the weekends,” he says.
