Florence Berthold designed a pendant lamp as part of her Bachelor of Arts and Media, she told us about the experience behind the work;
The biggest challenge with the Object and Design brief was realising the shape I had in my head. I was inspired by waves and flower petals. Each layer replicates the colours of the seven chakras and the chakras themselves replicate the beauty of a rainbow. We were restrained to only one material: either plastic, wood, fabric, paper or metal.
I’m very attracted to glass for its transparency so chose plastic to imitate the effect of glass. I tried different types of plastic and different ways to bend it. I sawed, sanded, drilled and glued using a heat gun. Most people thought it would work well into production and that alternative colour packages could be made to create personalised lamps.
To me the lamp evokes freedom and happiness. It imitates nature but is very abstract and elusive at the same time. Even though the lamp was created to fit over any dinner table, I created it thinking of my future home. Spirituality is an important part of my life. Art is the only way I can convey my life philosophy.
