Kirsten has been on a creative journey from a previous career in neuroscience to becoming a self-taught artist and a successful freelance television producer, writer, and director.
Originally from Christchurch, Kirsten spent many years in Auckland, and has now settled in Nelson, finding the lifestyle here fosters her creative passions.
She expresses a deep love for supporting NMIT whenever she can, as it aligns with her own values of curiosity, creativity, and community.
"Some people are highly specialised, but I'm a generalist," Kirsten says. “I believe the whole point about a creative career is you must be multi-specialised and willing to get out there and do things.”
Kirsten joined NMIT several years ago(external link) as a mature learner, originally signing up for a one-year diploma before quickly becoming hooked and completing a three-year degree.
“After one year I realised there was so much more to learn, and the more you learn, the more interest you have in learning,” she says.
Kirsten’s drive to learn has led her to phenomenal recent achievements, including her first solo art exhibition at the Quiet Dog Gallery, a milestone that has both humbled and amazed her.
“It’s almost unbelievable, but I did it. It’s proof of what you can accomplish by staying curious and open.”
For Kirsten, the path to a fulfilling creative career lies in adaptability. Having worked in various roles in television, she’s well acquainted with the need for flexibility.
Her involvement with NMIT’s photoshoot is just one example of her commitment to the arts, both as a professional and a lifelong learner, truly embodying the ethos of NMIT’s "Believe it, Become it" campaign.
